Not even Rose's closest friends knew that she had a secret lover for more than 20 years. It was only after meeting him at the end of the 1914-18 war that she began to write best-selling novels. Up to that time she had been writing efficiently but without the spark of brilliance and sense of humour and satire which her lover inspired.
