God Save the King
Classical Symphony in D .................. Prokofiev
Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, which was written in 1916-17, is a very charming and delightful little work but is not really representative of the composer's style. It was composed as a jeu d'esprit which, as its title would suggest, both in form and in idiom, harks back to the time of Haydn and Mozart. The music is clear-cut, full of straightforward melodies and tunes, and provides a most attractive glimpse of the eighteenth century through modern eyes.

8.17 app. Symphony No. 7, iq A ............ Beethoven
Two outstanding examples of the light-hearted side of Beethoven are the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, both of which were composed in 1812. That Beethoven had no intention of reflecting tragic emotions in these symphonies is proved by the fact that neither. has a slow movement, the nearest approach to one being the Allegretto in the Seventh Symphony. But while this movement may he full of delicate poetic musings, it is certainly devoid of any tragic significance. - Ralph Hill
