Newly released from the army, Dave Hirsh returns to the small Indiana town of Parkman disillusioned by his unsuccessful attempt to make a career as a writer. Here he takes up with Bama Dillert, a gambler, and Ginny Moor head, an illiterate, good-natured waif escaping from her Chicago past.
