Patterns in Solids by H. Judith Milledge , Ph.D. Department of Chemistry, University College, London
Before 1912, when the first X-ray diffraction photographs were obtained from crystals, scientists could only guess at the arrangements of atoms and molecules in solids. Dr. Milledge explains how diffraction enables us to study patterns of atoms, whether they are as simple as salt-which was in fact guessed correctly in 1812-or as complex as proIeins-which are still being unravelled.
