1641: the 23rd year of the 30 Years War raging throughout Europe. In this magnificently filmed historical adventure, Michael Caine gives an impressive performance as the captain of a group of German mercenaries who decide to winter in a valley rather than pillage it. He and former teacher Vogel gradually learn to respect each other, whilst superstition and brutality erode the enclosed society in ' the last valley'.
