The Village School

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Death, Threat or Survivalf
For the past ten years, small village schools have been closing at the rate of one a week.
Parents have fought the closures, claiming that these schools provide a firm grounding in the three Rs and turn out balanced and confident youngsters. But with the fall in the birth-rate, can one and two teacher schools survive? Would the children benefit more from, say, ' area ' schools? David Smeeton. the BBC's Education Correspondent, visits some of the areas where the protests have been the loudest, hearing from local parents, teachers, campaigners, education officials and the children themselves.
