The World About Us

on BBC Two England

Skateboard Kings
Young men all over the world have to prove themselves. If they are Masai in Kenya, perhaps they kill a lion; but if you are young and you live in the concrete cities of the Western world, how do you prove your skill, your courage, your sense of style? One way is to become a ' Skateboard King '.
To the uninitiated, skateboarding may evoke the idea of kids scooting down grey, wet, uneven concrete pavements, a danger to themselves and a menace to pedestrians. But to those involved, it is more than that, much more. To the addicts, it becomes a way of life. Skateboard Kings investigates this latest phenomenon at its source. Shot in southern California and Arizona, the film unravels this new mystique, its million-dollar related industry and the life-style and gravity-defying manoeuvres of its leading exponents.
