A Medieval Disputation consists of the Attack and Defence of a thesis conducted in the strict logical form used by the scholastics in the Middle Ages. This was the ancient discipline of the Inns of Court, and the Old Hall of Lincoln's Inn must have been the scene of many such disputations in medieval times. The Moderator, who presides over the debate, is Superior of the English Province of the Dominican Order, anciently called Black-friars. The Defender and Objector belong respectively to the English and American Provinces of the same Order.
