Mind, Matter and Mechanism

on BBC Radio 3

Five documentaries examining progress towards an understanding of the mechanisms of the brain. 1: A Map of Mentality
Nearly 5,000 scientists gathered in St Louis late last year to attack the most difficult problem in biology - understanding the workings of the ten thousand million nerve cells within the human brain. Several new techniques for examining the fine structure of the brain have produced great excitement among neuroscientists. Can substantial progress now be made in our knowledge of the nervous system? How close have we come to a map of mentality?
John Maddox attended the meeting, and he presents an account of the proceedings.
