JOANNA goodburn has a dream of the future as she arrives at Edinburgh University for the first time in its 400th anniversary year. After reading law, she hopes to ' have a flat in Geneva, be an international lawyer and ski at the weekends'. SERGIO CASCI, who'll read psychology, has been warned by his grandfather not to be a journalist (or a politician): 'If you're not a liar and a cheat you'll never make it.'
Both are among the 2,000 new students from all over Britain who matriculate at Edinburgh as the university returns to life for another academic year. Ahead of them lies freshers' week-seven non-stop days of faculty parties, introductory lectures, pub crawls. society displays and gallons of free wine and beer. Becoming a student involves lessons of varying kinds all over the campus.
