Composer of the Week: Weber

on BBC Radio 3

"Carried off before his time: who knows what and how much he might have achieved otherwise!" (Gustav Mahler )
Gustav Mahler presented highlights from his completion of Weber's unfinished opera Die Drei Pintos by saying: "My imagination was so taken by the wonderful fragments that I devoted myself to becoming steeped in the spirit of Weber. It's been great fun: my pieces are highly praised by critics and public as pure Weber!"
Plus Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs by Weber, who was the first composer to use the anthology: Mahler worked from Weber's copy when writing some of his own famous Wunderhorn settings.
Repeated next Thursday 11.30pm
