Newpin: a Lifeline
The NSPCC reports that over 40,000 British children risk neglect, or sexual or physical abuse. And many of them will grow up to neglect or abuse their own children. Depression, too, runs in families.
'Newpin' is an organisation which believes that these destructive patterns can be broken, by concentrating on the mothers of young children. Women get constant support from others who share their problems, and this, together with intensive psychotherapy, achieves remarkable results. 'I don't think anyone could have been more damaged than me,' says Barbara, now setting up another branch of Newpin. 'Look at me now. And if I can do it, anyone can.'
Newpin is not only successful - it is cheap.
