Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood

on BBC One London

Omnibus makes a valiant attempt to follow writer Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman on a bizarre trip across America.

Hunter Thompson is, to his dismay, one of America's biggest cult heroes. He prefers the title 'comic strip character' - for he insists that he has been confused with one of his own creations - the violent, drug-crazed journalist Raoul Duke. Duke first appeared in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a savage attack on what happened to the American Dream, illustrated by the English artist, Ralph Steadman.

Now, after his books, On the Campaign Trail, Hell's Angels, his articles for Rolling Stone, and his own attempt at running for political office as a 'freak-power' candidate, Hunter Thompson's life is to be made into a major feature film by Universal pictures. He decides enough is enough: the old Thompson must die, and in our film, he travels from Colorado to Hollywood, via Las Vegas, to exorcise the past and bury his old identity. Steadman goes with him, sketching. John Dean, of Watergate, puts in an appearance, and discusses with Hunter the prospect that history could repeat itself - surely not the Nixon 80 campaign?
