The Broken Spoke - a True Texan Honky Tonk

on BBC Radio 2

As part of Radio 2's Texas season to coincide with the 18th annual South by Southwest Music Festival held in Austin, Texas, Mark Lamarr celebrates 40 years of the Broken Spoke, an Austin country dance hall whose roster of performers includes Bob Wills, Dolly Parton, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Hank Thompson, Tex Ritter and Kitty Wells. Lamarr discussses the venue's celebrated mythology with founder James White, and meets up with roots-based singer Dale Watson, Austin-based act the Derailers and Ray Benson (of Asleep at the Wheel).
