VERA DA SILVA, aged 16, lives with her parents and six brothers and sisters in a slum in a big Brazilian city. Compared with the country area where they used to live, the family now consider themselves to be in some ways, better off. But everyday life is full of frustrations, hardships and thwarted ambitions-a familiar story for the millions of people who are still pouring into the cities of developing countries throughout the world.
