Play of the Month: Hello and Goodbye

on BBC One London

by Athol Fugard

Hester has been living as a prostitute in Johannesburg while her brother Johnnie stayed at home in Port Elizabeth to look after their sick father. After 12 years they meet again and are made to face the truth.

First written in 1965, this is a new television version of the stage production which won universal critical acclaim in London last year.

"Fugard is one of the outstanding poets of the human condition writing in the theatre today." (Daily Telegraph)
"One is gripped by the play's frontal emotional attack." (The Guardian)
"This is acting of the highest order, powerful, controlled, unforgettable." (Financial Times)
