Opera on 3: Live from the Met: Gotterdammerung

on BBC Radio 3

The New York Metropolitan Opera season ends with the climax of the Ringcycle, in which the thread of fate that joins the past with the future finally snaps. After the murder of her lover Siegfried, Brunnhilde sacrifices herself by riding her horse into the flames of his funeral pyre. This lifts the curse, causing the final destruction of the gods and the dawning of a new age.
