Armstrong Gibbs was born near Chelmsford in 1889, and was educated at Winchester College and Cambridge University. His musical studies at Cambridge came under the direction of Professor E. J. Dent ; later he studied at the Royal College of Music, eventually joining the College staff as a professor of composition.
Armstrong Gibbs has shown himself to be a composer of rare poetic sensitiveness and a highly skilled and polished craftsman. He appears to favour chamber music and songs, for it is in these forms that he has done most of his best work.
