Lisa and Leo are deeply in love but helpless against circumstances which conspire against them. In a letter Leo writes: 'Lisa, you are like a kingfisher in my life, cleaving the banks of the Seine with your beauty'. But the beauty of the kingfisher is seen only in flight - not when its wings are clipped.
