Berg's Lyric Suite

on BBC Radio 3

An Enigma Solved
Ever since its publication in 1927, musicians have pondered on a possible deeper significance to Berg's quotation from Tristan und Isolde and Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony. Recent discoveries have shed a totally new and unexpected light on them and also on Berg himself and the rest of the Suite. It is no longer ' six acts of a latent opera' as Adorno sensed, but a fully explicit paean of a love which, Tristan-like, Berg felt could only be fulfilled in death.
George Ferle talks about these discoveries and introduces the first British performance of the completeworkwithIts vocal finale, a setting of Baudelaire's De profundis clamavi. Berg's letters read by SANDOR ELÈS SARAH WALKER
