In January 1955, reports of injured passengers trapped in the wreckage of a derailed train inspired Dr John Collins to set up a unique mobile medical care unit based at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. Thirty-two years on, that unit is still going as other health authorities are beginning to take notice.
