The BBC Symphony Orchestra's principal guest conductor, David Robertson, opens this concert with the first performance of a work by British composer Sam Hayden, the first of ten BBC commissions this season. The massive and complex musical forces of Ives's Fourth Symphony (Proms First in 1966) are preceded by Bernstein's Auden-inspired symphony.
