Mr. A. L. Rowse: 'Karl Marx '
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Karl Marx , the great Socialist thinker. Marx was born in 1818 and, with his friend and collaborator, Friedrich Engels, published in 1848 his 'Communist Manifesto,' in which his essential ideas are embodied. The first volume of his most famous work, 'Das Kapital,' appeared in 1867. From his work sprung the social Democratic Parties of most European countries, and the present regime in Russia is the direct result of the application by Lenin of the teaching of Marx. His importance as a maker of the modern spirit will be estimated by Mr. A.L. Rowse, a Fellow of All Souls, and author of 'Politics and the Younger Generation.'
