Upon a winter's afternoon in 1917 the commander of Submarine E.50 watched one of Britain's largest and most modern submarines K.13 undergoing her trials in the Gareloch and preparing to dive. With a feeling of apprehension he saw a stream of air bubbles rise to the surface as the submarine submerged. Because he didn't like the look of it' he left a buoy behind to mark the spot, and immediately made a report to base.
