Composer of the Week: Medtner

Thanks to his lifelong friend Rachmaninov, Medtner was persuaded to travel to the USA to give concert tours and continue his search for an audience for his music. Today Donald Macleod introduces a piano sonata written at a time of great financial hardship, and the highly emotional" Epica" violin sonata which became a monument to
Medtner's brother Emil, his artistic mentor and guiding spirit.
