JERRY LEIBER and MIKE STOLLER were the first successful independent record producers in the history of the record business. Originally songwriters. they became record producers and created a new order by writing for record rather than live performance.
Writing originally for black performers and audiences, they developed street credible ' lyrics long before anyone ever thought of the description, and came up with seven hit songs for Elvis Presley at his peak Their " novelette " productions for the Coasters were crazy reflections of everyday life in America. contrasting with the • sweet-soul • style of their records for the Drifters.
Today they enjoy legendary status in the rock world although continuing to write and produce only spasmodically.
