A Book at Bedtime

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Officers and Gentlemen by EVELYN WAUGH : abridged by VIRGINIA BROWNE-WILKINSON Read by Hugh Burden
This is the sequel to Men at Arms, first broadcast as A Book at Bedtime in 1968. Guy Crouchback is a Roman Catholic divorced from an unfaithful wife. Regarding himself as no longer young, with no worthwhile future and quite expendable, he joins up in 1939 full of enthusiasm for the war against barbarous modern dictators. But by the autumn of 1940 he has found soldiering a very different experience from the glorious and terrible crusade he expected.
At this point Officers and Gentlemen takes up the story. Producer JOHN CARDY
