Talk by C. H. Roberts
Fellow of St. John's College, Oxford
Pagan literature was normally written on rolls rather than on leaved books (codices) until the third or fourth century A.D., but recent finds in Egypt show that Christian scriptures were apparently written on the codices right from the beginning. Mr. Roberts summarises the evidence for this surprising fact and suggests an explanation for it which would throw some light on the early history of the Church.
