Ivan the Terrible

on BBC One London

The Demjanjuk Dossier John Demjanjuk was a respectable retired car worker from Cleveland, Ohio. Was he also the notoriously brutal guard of the Nazi extermination camp at
Treblinka, where 874,000 Jewish men, women and children were murdered? For 14 months a .Jerusalem court considered whether he was an innocent victim of mistaken identity or the man the survivors remembered as 'Ivan the Terrible'.
Using actual footage from the courtroom, the film follows the dramatic progress of the trial.
It includes scenes of Demjanjuk's life in the United States and, using archival footage and rare photographs of Treblinka itself, it sheds new light on the most efficient death camp of them all.
On 18 April Demjanjuk was found guilty and sentenced to death. Both the case and the sentence have proved deeply disturbing to the people of Israel. He is now appealing against his sentence. Executive producer JENNY BARRACLOUGH
