BBC Proms 2006

on BBC Radio 3

From the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Yuri Bashmet returns to the Proms to perform Schnittke's bracing, humorous viola concerto, a work written for him. In tonight's all-Russian programme, Valery Gergiev continues the Shostakovich centenary theme with excerpts from the composer's politically correct anti-Capitalist ballet, The Golden Age, and ends with Tchaikovsky's heartfelt final symphony, a work premiered just ten days before the composer's death. Presented by Fiona Talkington.
