In October 1956, a modern airliner was cruising calmly above the Pacific on a routine flight between Honolulu and San Francisco. Within a matter of minutes, and without warning, two engines suddenly ceased to function. It quickly became obvious to the pilot that he had no alternative but to ditch his plane and passengers in the Ocean.
