On the posthumous publication of Robertson s sermons, the Saturday Review commented: ' When Mr. Robertson died, his name was scarcely known beyond the circle of his private friends..... Now. every word he wrote is eagerly sought for.' In a letter written towards the end of 1849. Robertson quotes a certain Dr. K-'s comment on the contrast between himself and other preachers: ' You preach positively instead of negatively; you state truths which they cannot deny; they can only talk of tendencies, consequences, etc..... but everyone sees that you have a message and a truth to establish; you set up your truth, and they are dismayed to find. If that be true. their view is knocked down. but you did not knock it down '
