Sam Jolly has persuaded his partner, James Pearson , to go to the new diggings at Gabriel's Gully. There, Pearson's luck turns-in the first week they wash up the best part of £ IOO's worth of gold. These new diggings fill up rapidly with adventurers and criminals of all types, and it is the attention of some of these characters lhat sends Pearson hurrying off to Dunedin to register their claim.
