In Britain Orde Wingate is dimly remembered as a brilliant, eccentric Second World War general, leader of the Chindits in the Burmese jungle, where he died in 1944. In Israel he is a vivid legendary hero. T. R. Fyvel met him in pre-war Palestine when Wingate was organising Jewish Night Squads to protect kibbutzim. In this talk he recalls the man and the mission, and assesses the influence. (Rpt )
