Private Lives: The Private Life of the Swan

on BBC One London

The mute swan is the largest and most graceful bird in Britain. This film gives a close-up view of its life-style, following first the story of a pair of nesting swans - known to the local water bailiff as William and Mary - and then the story of their offspring until they in their turn start to breed. Mute swans pair up when they are two or three years old by going through a most beautiful courtship display. Most pairs are faithful for life, the 'divorce' rate being less than ten per cent.
