Gib Lightfoot has come to the conclusion that his uncle, 'Mad Hugh,' is not so mad after all. Especially when, carrying messages to Wareham Town, he meets Raoul the minstrel and recognises his voice as one he heard in the night at the Mill. Travelling the road to dance at fairs with Gamelin and Maudleyn, Gib gets embroiled in a fight between Raoul and some toughs who are egged on by the sinister Brother Martin of Bindon Abbey.
