Paul Hindemith (1895-1963)
A search for concise expression, for clarity and harmony.
With Germanic thoroughness and strength of purpose,
Hindemith composed sonatas for virtually every instrument.
These served not only to fill gaps in the repertoire but also, as he explained to his publisher at the end of 1939. 'as a technical exercise for the great coup which I hope to bring off next spring: Die Harmonie der
Welt ...' (an opera based on the life and ideas of Kepler).
The week's programmes, which include a selection of the sonatas, culminate in the composer's own recording of the Symphony derived from this opera.
