In the fifth of six programmes,
Alyn Shipton concentrates on Kansas City which was founded in 1850 at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers.
The city was the birthplace of composer
Virgil Thompson , the Count Basie Orchestra and of saxophonists
Charlie Parker and Ben Webster.
It has its own orchestra and a permanent opera company - the Lyric
Opera. In the early part of this century, the city was home to several distinguished ragtime composers, including James Scott.
