The Sunday Prom

on BBC One London

The last in this series of Henry Wood
Promenade concerts
- features the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Georg Solti in a performance of the Concerto for Orchestra by Bela Bartok Introduced by Richard Baker
The CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA caused a tremendous stir when they visited the Proms in 1978. As part of their return visit, recorded last night, the choice of music could not be more appropriate: this is Bartok's centenary year;
SIR GEORG SOLTY was a student of Bartok's in Budapest, and the Chicago Orchestra has the superb virtuosity that this 20th-century masterpiece requires.
As Bartok himself wrote: 'The title of this' symphony-like orchestral work is explained by its tendency to treat the single instrument or instrument groups in a " concertante " or soloistic manner.'
