James P Johnson. Julian Joseph pays tribute to James P Johnson , often heralded as the father of Harlem stride, a piano style popular in New York during the twenties.
Johnson was a major force in the evolution of jazz piano from ragtime and influenced many other great players, including Fats Waller , Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Thelonious Monk.
