During the last year, elementary particle physicists and X-ray astronomers have been in what may prove to be an epic phase of discovery.
This ' big science ' is pushing forward our fundamental understanding of the universe.
The Advisory Board for the Research Councils has recommended ' a substantial redeployment of resources away from " big science" so as to maintain the national capability in other areas of scientific research.'
