Born in 1888 in Yorkshire,
Maurice Besly studied at Cams College, Cam-bridge, and at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He became Director of Music at Queen's College, Oxford, in 1919, and a year later was appointed successor to
Sir Hugh Allen as conductor of the Oxford
Orchestral Society. While a prisoner during the last war, he raised an orchestra in the camp.
