The Wreck of the Deutschland
When, in the winter of 1875, Gerard Manley Hopkins read of the loss of the steamship
Deutschland off the mouth of the Thames, he was so moved that he wrote his famous poem. But
Hopkins was unaware of the dramatic story behind the newspaper reports.
One hundred years after the death of the poet, Sean Street pieces together the jigsaw of events.
