Composer of the Week: Wolf

on BBC Radio 3

3: Wolf and the Theatre
Although Wolf completed only one opera - Der Corregidor - he started work on another - Manuel Venegas - and had a host of ideas for other possible operatic subjects. He was convinced that the lyric theatre was his vocation. Jeremy Sams presents a selection of Wolf's theatrical music, including excerpts from the fragmentary Manuel Venegas and from the symphonic poem
Penthesilea, inspired by the poetic drama of Heinrich von Kleist.
Manuel Venegas (excerpts) Josef Protschka (tenor),
Mitsuko Shirai (mezzo), Wurttemberg Chamber Choir, Hartmut Höll (piano) Penthesilea (excerpts) Paris Orchestra , conductor Daniel Barenboim
Der Corregidor (excerpts)
Doris Soffel (mezzo), Werner Hollweg (tenor), Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
(baritone), Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, conductor Gerd Albrecht
