3: Wolf and the Theatre
Although Wolf completed only one opera - Der Corregidor - he started work on another - Manuel Venegas - and had a host of ideas for other possible operatic subjects. He was convinced that the lyric theatre was his vocation. Jeremy Sams presents a selection of Wolf's theatrical music, including excerpts from the fragmentary Manuel Venegas and from the symphonic poem
Penthesilea, inspired by the poetic drama of Heinrich von Kleist.
