New Britons

on BBC Radio 4 FM

medium only
The final programme in this series about people born abroad who have chosen to settle in Britain.
6: Brian Wang of Merseyside
Although he only arrived in Britain four years ago -to continue his training as a metallurgical engineer - Brian Wang is now deeply involved in the cultural life of Merseyside. After being spotted performing his early morning Tai Chi exercises in the precincts of Liverpool Cathedral, he was asked to give WEA classes in this and other classical Chinese disciplines. This summer he took a mixed cast of Chinese and British players to the Edinburgh Festival to perform a modernised version of the ancient Chinese play Monkey King:
' British people respect the Chinese, but they don't understand them. They know a lot about Chinese cooking but very little about our cultural heritage. What I'm trying to do is bridge that gap ...' Recordings compiled by CHARLES ALLEN
