For seventy years, from its opening in 1874, successive schoolmistresses kept a diary of events at the village school of Haskayne, in Lancashire, recording such things as the pupil teacher's insolence in 1882 and the lesson on patriotism in August 1914. The speaker tells some of the incidents he has discovered in the diaries.
