The Misanthrope
The National Theatre production of MOLIÈRE'S classic in an English version by TONY HARRISON with Alec McCowen and Diana Rigg This version was commissioned by The National Theatre to celebrate the tercentenary of Moliere's death in 1973. Tony Harrison and the director, John Dexter , set the play in 1966 during the ' reign ' of Charles de Gaulle , exactly 300 years after the first performance.
