A prisoner on a ship travelling from Argentina to London was confined to a cell four decks below the main deck for the whole voyage. His cell contained the usual washbasin, bunk, and ventilator. He knew nothing about navigation and was not allowed to go out on deck. Without being told by anyone, how was the prisoner able to tell when the ship had crossed the Equator?
