Opera in three acts
Music by Stefano Landi
Libretto by GIULIO ROSPIGLIOSI The papal family of the Barberini were extravagant in their patronage of the arts.
During the carnival in 1631, this spiritual opera was given in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. Alexius leaves Rome on a pilgrimage, and returns to live unrecognised in his father's house. He is tempted to reveal his identity to his sorrowing family, but at the hour of temptation he dies and is recognised at last. Angels rejoice over his faithfulness to his calling.
