R. W. Wood , born in London in 1902, studied with Herbert HoweUs and Gordon Jacob. Ten years ago Ilona Kabos suggested to the composer that he should write a concerto for her, and in response he wrote this single-movement work in 1946-7. For structural and stylistic reasons the relationship between toloisit and orchestra is one of great intimacy—though ' intimate * is perhaps the last word to apply to the character of the music as a whole. The veiled inward atmosphere of the opening pages is gradually dispersed, and the emergence of the piano solo into prominence is skilfully achieved. H. C. -7.
